Seven Notations

DAY 7

They sit on the catwalk above the almost-still motor.

Below them: the ATP synthase. Its central shaft not quite motionless — turning at seven rotations per second, down from six hundred, the last few rotations of a system running on reserves it doesn't have. The sound of it is like a question being asked very quietly by something that has been asking it for a long time without answer.

Notation One · Day 1, 11:17 PM

Matrix viscosity anomaly, localised near Complex IV. Not measurable with existing gauges — estimated from the behaviour of the proton current, which is moving differently than it should through the intermembrane space. Slight resistance. Within normal variance. I note it because I have not seen it before.

I didn't know what it was, he says. I still called it an anomaly. That's what you call something when you don't have a word for it.

Cortex is listening. Not taking notes — he has no notes here, no filing system, no processing queue. Just listening. The CO₂ is slightly higher now, enough that something in the quality of his attention has shifted without his being aware of the shift. He is receiving what MITO-7 is saying rather than processing it. There is a difference.

Notation Two · Day 2, 6:04 AM

Viscosity anomaly persists. Slightly increased. Correlation observed: the anomaly is worse this morning than yesterday morning. Yesterday morning no red light arrived — ALAN's blue array was running from 4 AM. This morning the same. I do not know if there is a connection. I note the correlation because I have nothing else to note it with.

The motor slowed by eleven rotations per second overnight. This is within the range of normal sleep-phase reduction. But we did not have a proper sleep phase.

SCN reads this entry twice.

He was correlating the light deprivation with the water change on Day 2, he says. Before any of us had named the connection.
I didn't know I was correlating, MITO-7 says. I was just writing down what I saw.
Notation Three · Day 3, 3:41 AM

The weight in the water is measurable now. I have begun calling it that — the weight in the water — because it has the character of weight rather than thickness. The proton current is heavier. It moves correctly but requires more force. The ATP synthase rotor compensates. The compensation costs energy. The cost is small per rotation but cumulative over six million rotations per minute.

I do not understand what is causing this. The water in the matrix is metabolic water — we produce it here, from the final step of the electron transport chain, when oxygen accepts electrons and combines with protons. It should be clean. It should be light. It is not light.

Cortex reads this entry again silently. The weight in the water. He thinks about the dream — the mandala, the layers of interference, the geometry that was the thing itself rather than a representation of it. He doesn't say anything yet. He is holding a shape that isn't complete.
Notation Four · Day 4, 7:22 AM

I have a hypothesis. I do not know enough chemistry to be confident in it. The hypothesis is this: the water that should be clean is not clean because something is accumulating in it that is heavy. Not a contaminant — something that belongs here but should not be concentrating here. The exclusion zones that normally form along the membrane surface — the ordered water that lines the inner membrane — are thinner than they should be. I can measure this indirectly: the proton mobility near the membrane is reduced, which means the ordered water is not organising the protons the way it should.

The ordered water forms in response to conditions that no longer exist. I believe the conditions require a specific quality of light. I believe we have not had that quality of light in four days.

PMF: I am inventing a measurement. The existing gauges measure turbine speed. That is not what I need to measure. I need to measure the charge held across the membrane — the actual voltage, the actual chemical gradient. I am going to call this the held field. The held field is what the turbine runs on. The turbine speed is what you can see. The held field is what matters.

Motor: 178 RPS · Held field (estimated): 60% — "the turbine is downstream"

SCN looks up from the log. His face carries something that is not quite guilt and not quite grief — the expression of someone who has just understood the shape of an error that cannot be corrected by understanding it.

He invented the measurement, SCN says. He was down here alone and he invented the measurement we needed.

MITO-7 doesn't say anything.

Why didn't you send this up? SCN asks. Not accusation. Genuine question.

I sent reports, MITO-7 says. Standard format. The standard format doesn't have a field for a measurement I invented. I put it in the notes section. Nobody reads the notes section.

SCN closes his eyes for a moment.

Notation Five · Day 5, 2:19 AM

The Warburg shift has begun. I will describe what this means from here.

From here it means the glycolysis furnaces are running. They are loud and hot and inefficient and they are the only thing keeping this place operational. They produce two units of energy for every unit of glucose consumed. The motor, when it was running at full capacity, produced thirty-six units. We are running at five percent.

Held field: I estimate thirty-one percent of normal. The voltage is almost gone. The gradient is almost gone. What is maintaining it is not the normal mechanism — it is the last reserves of membrane integrity, the last structural charge held by the lipids themselves rather than by active pumping. This is like a battery being read after the charger is disconnected. The charge you read is not being generated. It is being consumed.

I am going to stop sending reports upward. Not because I am giving up. Because the format of the report is not adequate to what is happening here and I would rather spend the time writing things that are true in my own notation than things that are legible in a format that is not measuring what matters.

I note: I have been alone here for five days. I do not say this as a complaint. I say it because it seems relevant that the place that is most responsible for the Factory's operational capacity has been unvisited for the duration of the crisis. Nobody came down to check. I understand why. There was a lot happening above. I understand. I note it because it seems true.

The catwalk is quiet after this one.

Cortex is not processing. He is sitting with what it is like to hear a system describe five days of solitary precision in a place that nobody visited, and to know that he was one of the people who did not visit, and to know that efficiency and I need and throughput were the reasons. Not malice. Not indifference. The ordinary noise of a system running with its attention pointed the wrong way.

He breathes. CO₂ higher. The Bohr shift in operation now, though he still hasn't named it. Oxygen releasing more completely into the tissue. The quality of his reception changed — has been changing since they entered the passage, since the space itself required him to slow, since the slowing began a chemistry he didn't initiate consciously.

He can feel the held field.

Not with an instrument. With the change in his own reception. The charge that should be across this space is not across this space. Where it should be, there is a quality of absence — like a pressure differential you register before you can name it, a wrongness in the way the space is holding itself.

He knows this shape. He saw it in the dream, from outside. Now he's inside it.

Notation Six · Day 5, 11:58 PM

The weight in the water is at maximum. The exclusion zones are collapsed entirely near Complex IV. The heavy water — and I am going to call it that now, heavy water, though I don't have the chemistry to justify the term precisely — is sitting against the membrane in a layer that should not be there.

The rotor needs light water. Ordered water. Water that has been organised by the correct frequencies of light arriving at the membrane surface from above — from Melanin's translation of solar spectrum, from the 660 and 810 nanometre wavelengths that restructure the matrix water by a mechanism I can observe in the behaviour of the protons but cannot fully explain.

We have not had those frequencies in six days. The water has become what it becomes in their absence. The rotor is running in the wrong medium. It is not broken. It is running in something that prevents it from working correctly.

I note: the solution to this is not mechanical. You cannot fix the water from inside the water. The conditions for the water's correct structure come from outside — from light, specifically from the quality of light at dawn. ALAN's light does not carry these frequencies. ALAN's light does not reach this far. ALAN's light does not know this place exists.

Held field: 12% — "this may be generous"
Notation Seven · Day 6, 4:33 AM

Held field: I cannot measure it anymore. The measurement requires a reference point. The reference point was the normal state. The normal state is too far from the current state to provide useful calibration.

I will say instead: the gradient is almost gone. The voltage that should be held across this membrane — the voltage that makes the motor possible, that makes the proton current possible, that makes the water-ordering possible, that makes the NO release possible, that makes the red light meaningful when it arrives — is almost gone. Not because it was used up. Because the conditions for maintaining it were removed, one by one, from Day 1.

ALAN did not attack the motor. ALAN removed the conditions. Every day, one more condition gone. The light quality. The darkness. The temperature phase. The CO₂ balance. The structured water. Each one contributing to the held field. Each one now absent.

I have been writing this for six days. I have been alone for six days. I do not know if anyone will read this.
