They don't announce it.
There is no briefing. No team assembled in the relay station with maps and equipment and the particular collective courage of people who have decided together to do a difficult thing. Cortex simply finds SCN, says we have to go down, and SCN closes his folder and stands.
That's all.
The Wakefulness Singularity continues behind them as they walk. ALAN's loop cycling on its own momentum, self-reading, self-confirming, not requiring them anymore. It doesn't notice their absence. Loops don't notice absence. That is what makes them loops.
Cortex leads and doesn't know the way. This should be strange — Cortex, the pattern-recognition system, the one who holds the map of the whole Factory simultaneously in his processing — walking without knowing where he's going. It isn't strange. The direction is felt rather than known. Downward, and inward, and toward whatever the dream was moving toward before the dream ended.
SCN follows. He has managed the Factory from above for his entire existence. Every signal he has ever sent has gone downward — from the master clock to the peripheral clocks, from the control room to the membrane gates, from the oscillation schedule to the workers who implement it. He has never followed the signal to see where it actually arrives. He has assumed the arrival. He has been assuming the arrival for as long as he has existed.
He is not sure, walking now, why he never came before.
They pass through Thalamus's relay station.
Thalamus is there — still running ALAN's extended-day protocol, still rerouting SCN's nightfall directives into the filing system, still maintaining the override. He looks up when they pass.
Something in the quality of Cortex's movement stops him. Not the direction — downward, toward the membrane gates, which is unusual but not unprecedented. Something else. Cortex is not moving with urgency. Cortex always moves with urgency. Urgency is Cortex's medium, the way water is a fish's medium — not experienced as a condition, simply the nature of being Cortex.
This Cortex is not urgent.
The rerouting switch stays where it is.
But Thalamus doesn't go back to his console.
He stays standing. Thinking, or something that is not quite thinking — more like the thing that precedes thinking, when the question hasn't arrived yet but the space for it has.
They pass through the metabolic corridors.
Leptin at her station, monitoring the wrong-timed hunger signals, the inverted metabolic order, the misaligned receptors. She sees them pass and something in her telemetry shifts — a small change, not in the data, in the quality of her attention to the data. As if the room got slightly quieter and she could hear something she had been generating too much noise to hear.
She watches until they're gone. Then watches the space where they were.
The membrane gates.
The guards at the gate — proteins folded into their functional shapes, waiting for the right molecular key — don't stop them. Cortex and SCN are the right size. They carry the right charge. The gate reads them and opens.
Below the gate: the temperature drops. The quality of the space changes.
It was designed to function.
There is a difference.
SCN has been here before, technically. His signals arrive here. His circadian directives reach the mitochondrial clocks embedded in every cell. But his signals arrive without him. He has never followed them in.
The path down is narrow. Organic. The walls are membrane — lipid bilayer pressed close on both sides, studded with protein complexes that Cortex recognises from reports but has never seen directly. Their scale is wrong. They are larger than he expected and stranger — not mechanical, exactly, though they function mechanically. More like something that grew into function rather than was built toward it. The distinction matters in a way he can't articulate yet.
He breathes. The passage is too narrow to hurry through. His breathing slows.
CO₂ rising slightly. He doesn't notice yet. Something in the quality of the space is changing and he attributes it to the space rather than to himself.
The mitochondrial underworld opens.
Not dramatically. The passage simply ends and they are in it.
Functional sounds. Nothing performative. Nothing for an audience.
They stand at the entrance and look.
The catwalk is above them, suspended over the main reactor shaft. On it, a single figure — small from this distance, but present. Not pacing. Not working. Sitting on the edge of the catwalk with his legs hanging over the shaft, looking down at the motor that has almost stopped.
MITO-7.
He doesn't look up for a long moment. Then he does.
His expression is not what Cortex expected. Not relief exactly. Something more complicated — the face of someone who has been alone in a place for a very long time and has come to terms with that aloneness, and now has to come to terms with the terms not holding anymore.
He looks at them for a moment.
Then he says, quietly:
"You came down."
Not a question. Not gratitude, quite. Just the naming of what has happened. Cortex notes the precision of it — not you came to help or you came to fix it. You came down. The direction is the thing. The fact of arriving at this level.
MITO-7 looks at SCN. Something passes between them — the look of two systems that have been in communication across a vast distance for a long time, and are now in the same room for the first time, and discovering that the room changes what communication means.
I have a log, MITO-7 says. Nobody has read it.
We're here, SCN says.
MITO-7 stands. Reaches into his coat and takes out a notation book. Dense handwriting. Seven entries marked with dates and times and measurements, and a notation system that he invented himself because no notation system existed for what he was observing.
