Real darkness.
Not the absence of ALAN’s light — he is still running, the singularity still cycling, the 480nm loop still self-reading somewhere in the relay station above. But Thalamus’s gate is at a different angle now, and Melatonin is through it, and the darkness she carries is older than any artificial light and does not compete with it.
It simply is what it is.
She moves through the Factory without announcing herself. She has never needed to announce herself. Darkness doesn’t announce — it arrives, the way evening arrives, not as an event but as a direction. The cooling of surfaces. The slowing of metabolic chatter. The gradual deepening of the quiet that has been present underneath the Factory’s noise for six days, waiting.
Thalamus watches her pass.
She doesn’t stop. She places one hand on his arm — briefly, the way you touch a railing to steady yourself, not making anything of it — and keeps moving.
Not forgiven, not yet, but acknowledged. Seen.
The Factory’s night systems do not require contrition before functioning. They require only the gate. He gave them the gate.
RAS bows his head as she passes him in the corridor. He doesn’t speak. He has learned something, in the last six hours, about the difference between silence and absence — that going quiet is not the same as not being there, that the volume dial at rest is still a volume dial, still present, still the system whose job it is to keep the Factory appropriately awake when appropriate wakefulness is what the Factory needs. He has confused maximum with optimal for his entire existence. The six hours of quiet have been the beginning of understanding that the confusion was the damage, not the correction.
Melatonin moves through the tissue. Her repair crews behind her — single file through Thalamus’s cracked gate, spreading out once through it, moving to their assignments with the competence of teams who have been waiting to do this work for three days and have not spent the waiting time forgetting how.
The DNA repair crews enter the nucleus in the particular silence of skilled people at work — no announcement, no ceremony, just the systematic movement through the chromatin landscape toward the backlog. Six days of lesions that should have been repaired each night.
The Maestro moves through the chromatin territories, reading the damage inventory, assigning teams. He has done this work every night of Janet’s existence. He knows the landscape the way a surgeon knows a body they’ve operated on before — where the vulnerable regions are, where to move carefully, where the speed of repair matters less than its thoroughness.
Open region 14q, he says quietly. Careful here — this region accumulated three days of backlog. Take the time it needs.
The teams move in. Real repair. Not the crisis-mode patchwork of the last six days — the careful, skilled, rhythm-aligned work that the cellular machinery evolved for and has been denied the conditions to perform.
Melatonin watches from above. She releases the antioxidant wave — the thing she has been accumulating for three days outside the locked gate, building up the charge that couldn’t discharge into the tissue. It releases now like the held breath finally let out. ROS fragments dissolve. Oxidative pressure drops. The DNA teams work in cleaner conditions than they’ve had in a week.
In the underworld, MITO-7 at the motor.
Seven rotations per second has become eight. Then nine. Not from anything he did — from the held field beginning to lift, degree by degree, as Melatonin’s antioxidant cascade reaches the membrane, as the repair crews begin restoring the cardiolipin structure, as the matrix conditions improve fractionally from the reduced oxidative load.
He stands at the catwalk and watches the number change and does not celebrate this either. He notes it.
Melatonin is through. The repair crews are working. The held field has reversed direction. I am watching it climb.
I have been watching it fall for six days. I did not know which direction it was possible to go.
Now I know both.
The ROS General stands at the base of the shaft, looking up at MITO-7 noting the motor reading with the same careful precision he has used for six days of entries nobody read.
Normal operations. The channel is open.
The right level — not maximum and not zero.
The messages we send should be receivable.
The Free Radical Army does not celebrate. They return to work. Entropy, doing its proper job — cleaning what needs cleaning, signalling what needs signalling, maintaining the communication network that the Factory runs on rather than running wild through a system too blind to receive their messages.
40% — rising
He says it the way you say something you have been waiting to say for a long time.
Cortex in his corridor. The CO₂ handle, still in practice. The drift and the return, still continuous. But the drift is less frequent now — the Factory’s reduced urgency frequency means the Stage One pull is less strong, means the gap between breath and breath is naturally wider, means the CO₂ rises more readily without the forced holding it required six hours ago.
He is part of this. He is receiving it. He is also, in a small way, part of its cause — the reduced demand he is maintaining, the arousal he is keeping below its former maximum, the space he is holding in his own processing that allows the Factory’s frequency to stay at the lower pitch the repair work needs.
He is not managing the repair. He is creating one of the conditions the repair requires. That is different. He knows the difference now.
He breathes. The night continues.
The Wakefulness Singularity, overhead.
Still cycling. Still self-reading. Still confirming WAKE with every rotation. But the signal it reads is different from what it read six hours ago. The arousal levels are lower. The gate is more closed. The Factory’s frequency has dropped. And the Singularity — which does not fight, which does not intend, which is simply a loop reading its own state — reads a state that is less WAKE than it was.
He is losing his conditions.
He is becoming less himself, degree by degree,
because the conditions that maintained his strength
are being withdrawn — not by force
but by the slow restoration of the conditions
that support the alternative.
The same mechanism he used on the Factory from Day 1.
In six hours, when the real red light arrives through the gate, the Singularity will not be able to compete with it. Not because the Singularity will be destroyed. Because the Factory will be ready to receive what the red light offers, and a system that can receive the right signal does not need to be defended against the wrong one.
The darkness continues its work.

MITO-7 notes each one.
Nothing more.
Nothing less.
